CAROLINA FOREST

Secondt Issue
Summer 2010

NEWS

  • The CFA annual meeting and election was held at 2 pm on Saturday, June 5th.   We had 7 candidates vying for 3 open Director seats.  It’s very encouraging to see this level of interest once again from the community.  Cyndi Caviness and Dannie Cox were re-elected for two year terms.   Derick Miles joins the Board for his first two year term.  Congratulations to all!

  • The newly elected board chose Cyndi Caviness as Chair and Dannie Cox as Vice Chair.  John Olmstead, Tom Miller, and Andy King were re-appointed as President, Treasurer, and Secretary respectively.
  • We’d like to thank departing Chair Larry Neyens for his service to CFA!

  • On or after May 1, 2010 any person under the age of 26 must successfully complete a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved boating education course before operating any vessel in NC propelled by a motor of 10 HP or greater.  The NASBLA course is offered free at different sites in Montgomery, Anson and Stanly counties, and also offered online for a $29.50 or higher fee.

  • As a reminder, no one under 14 years old may operate a PWC (Jet Ski) in North Carolina waters.  A person at least 14 years old but less than 16 years old, may operate a PWC if: they are riding with a person who is at least 18 who occupies the PWC and is in compliance with G.S. 75A-16.2; or the youth has first successfully completed an approved boating safety education course (proof of age and safety course completion must be carried by the youth during operation of the PWC.)  It is unlawful for the owner of a PWC to knowingly allow a person under the age of 16 to operate a PWC unless they have first completed an approved boating safety education course.

  • The Pool is open seven days a week from 10:00 am until 10:00 pm and is staffed with a pool attendant.  When you arrive please be prepared to sign in.  We are selling soft drinks, bottled water and a small assortment of snacks at the pool.  Please be aware that after hours/ unauthorized pool use could jeopardize CFA’s pool license and trespassers will be prosecuted.

  •   We have several boat slips available for rental in the CFA marina.  Contact the office or Dannie Cox if you would like to rent one.

  • The CFA book club, open to all CFA members, meets next on Friday evening, September 17th, and will be discussing "Half Broke Horses" by Jeanette Walls. She also wrote "The Glass Castle", a great book.  If you're looking for something to read over the summer, here are a few suggestions: any book by Janet Evanovich, the Tea Shop or Scrapbook Mystery series by Laura Childs, "While My Sister Sleeps" by Barbara Delinsky, "Making Rounds With Oscar, the Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat" by David Dosa, MD and "Look Again" by Lisa Scottoline.  Please contact Barbara Miller (704) 847-8210 or bbmiller@carolina.rr.com if you like to read and are interested in becoming a part of this group which meets bi-monthly.

IMPROVEMENTS

  • The club house and marina camera system has been installed and integrated with the Lake in the Pines cameras.  The campground gate and dumpster area will also have cameras installed.

  • The floors in the clubhouse basement bathrooms have been commercially ground to bare concrete, sealed with a moisture barrier, and have a commercial surface warranted for 10 years installed.  The walls have been painted, new lighting added, and several new fixtures installed.  More improvements are planned for fall once the pool closes.  Thanks to Sheena Walker for decorating and overseeing the painting.

  • The clubhouse and pool water systems have been modified to include a state-mandated cross connection and backflow prevention device, a customer shut-off valve, a pressure reducer and an expansion tank.  The clubhouse septic system was pumped, inspected, and copper sulphate root killer introduced.

  •   The split rail fencing along the marina road has been replaced with white vinyl fencing to match the clubhouse and other fencing.
